Heiner Thiel

Born 1957 in Bernkastel-Kues (D), lives and works in Wiesbaden

Our idea of space is mainly influenced by our perception of plane and vice versa; i.e. surface and space define each other, are not conceivable being uncoupled. Colour is added, stimulating and challenging our cognition. In my work I am especially interested in the threshold of plane, space and colour: when does a plane become three-dimensional and when a space two-dimensional? Which relevance does colour have? Means are given to me: line – plane – space – colour. Possibilities: like the space – unlimited… Heiner Thiel, 1996 /2013

The curved, more precisely concave planes of Heiner Thiel are absolutely unmistakable, of pure beauty, clear and irritating at a time. Emanating from an uncomplicated nevertheless highly sophisticated manufacturing process they are dyed bodies, but in a fascinating way discarnate at the same time, dependent on the point of view. The paint applied to the aluminum-plane is razor-thin, the aluminum anodized. Though each work is coated with only one colour, the works are never monochrome.

The light reflected in the paint, visualizing the colours, animates the plane tremendously. It changes from two– to three–dimensionality.

If we let ourselves in, Thiel’s works have no beginning and no end. The visual experience in front of these formally stringent works becomes mysteriously timeless and unlimited.
