Piet Tuytel

Born in 1956 in Haarlem(NL), lives there and works in Velserbroek

Visual interference in objects and our common knowledge I want to irritate, to disturb the connection between the object (a chair e.g.) and the memory the viewer has about that particular object. A meaningless piece of shred metal of no value becomes an object, gets a new dimension, a new existence remaining conscious.

In his multifaceted and diversified work the artist joins industrial materials, colour, stringent and reduced forms, and seriality.

His material mixes as well as the intentionally chosen combinations of colours on steel panels and steel chassis convince in any size.

Double t-steel beam, steel panels and others are often only insignificantly altered, but cut decisively and at a key position, sawed, screwed and/or lacquered. The result of this working process are sculptural objects, being both specific objects in terms of Minimal Art and classical sculpting. Indeed Tuytel’s works do not need and prefer socles, they stand in the world on their own, are part of it.

Volume, proportions, weight, activation of the surrounding space are vital parameters, guiding us to discover and recognize the art of Piet Tuytel.
