Šakir Gökćebağ

Born in 1965 in Denizli / Turkey, lives and works in Hamburg

„Contemporary art in particular must not be difficult and complicated. About simple things you can philosophize very well, I think. If you realize that with a lot of creativity you can diversify simple objects, and if you find these objects within another context, then you will appreciate these objects even more. Life becomes livelier.” Šakir Gökćebağ.

Several grants and awards, not only bursary of the State of Austria, and National ART award, Ankara, Turkey, in 1991, 1995/96 DAAD-grant, 1996 Markus Lüpertz Prize and 2012 Georg Macinus Prize, both by the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, and 2013 Foundation ‘Kunstfonds’, Bonn, (D)

Šakir Gökćebağ, the Turkish artist living in Hamburg, became well-known internationally for his objects full of humor, made from elements of every-day subjects. Almost every material can be used: hoses, umbrellas, tissues, toilet-paper, vegetables and many more. He alienates familiar items till their complete loss of function. His works are in the tradition of humorous Turkish stories that turn terms of our every-day life upside down in a naively absurd way.

He creates confusing new objects from umbrella framework without covering, from buckets found in do-it-yourself-stores without bottom, replaced by circles of carpeting, theatrical staging from unwound toilet paper, prayer chains fixed in a way that reminds of the geometrical icons of supremacism. Clothes-pegs, intended to fix things, clutch at each other, together they form the silhouette of themselves, in great numbers they become laundry baskets or fragile ladders.

With utmost rigor Šakir Gökćebağ anatomizes the elements of the basic objects, corrupts their proper intended use, and creates poetical new pictorial realities full of humorous intensity.
