Dóra Maurer

Born in 1937 in Budapest (HU), lives and works in Budapest.

She is an artist, film maker and curator. Between 1967 and 2007 she taught at different art academies in Hungary. Starting with a work-grant in Vienna a 30year-long period began for Dóra Maurer, living alternatively in Vienna and Budapest. She got several Hungarian and international awards, amongst others in 2003 the National Prize Kossuth, 2013 the one ‘Peter C. Ruppert for Concrete Art in Europe’. In 1982 she totally painted an old tower-room in Burgberg, Lower Austria, that became a key work.

Dóra Maurer is artist, film maker and curator of exhibitions. In her art she uses the most different media and material: printing, painting, photography and experimental film. Being a representative of Hungarian neo-avant-garde she is a central figure in contemporary concrete art and is represented in the most important collections world-wide. Her art is characterized by perspective constructions or rather perspective distortion of geometric forms. Dóra Maurer transfers rectangular and square planes of different colours to a flat orthogonal picture carrier with hemispherically domed grid, evoking a virtual three-dimensionality. The sensitively differentiated colour-planes partially interfere with each other and seem to float on the skin of a spheric space. In the context of her opus magnum the artist always searches for new phrasing for themes such as movement and changement, interrelation of space and time, rule and internal variance. Variation is a central aspect of Dóra Maurer’s work. The edition created for youngcollectors does not vary; it remains the same – fascinating, magic and beautiful.
