Henriëtte van't Hoog

Born in 1943 in Amsterdam, lives and works in Amsterdam

My work – geometric, abstract – often makes you lose your balance. I play with the perspective of cube-like forms, with their three-dimensionality, their colour and light. When you walk along these objects, their forms change, their perspective collapses. The reflecting paint on the back of the object radiates its colour on the wall. The reflection emphasises its spatiality and gives the thing a poetic annotation.

The object by Henriëtte van ’t Hoog, is placed on the wall and puzzles by the geometric order, it fakes something that is not such a thing. Inclined lines, hard edges seem to demonstrate a perspective - corresponding to our actual world – that is a mixture of the virtual and the factual.

This delusion has a long and great tradition in occidental art, if only you think of the stilted arches of churches or pictures of René Magritte, M.C.Escher and Victor Vasarely. Though van ’t Hoog’s objects are in this tradition, basically they are not chimaera. Her objects are painted geometrical bodies, floating in front of the wall. Perfectly worked and deliberately depainted in powerful contrasts, they generate an intensive and genuine reflex on the wall, they are bodies in the world.
